Although the synchronous generators have commonly been controlled with linear regulator, nonlinear controller recently are widely used due to better performance particularly in presence of fault in the system. Nonlinear controllers and specially sliding mode controller consider both nonlinearity and uncertainty in the model therefore increase performance in comparison with traditional linear controller. This paper investigates the application of a MIMO sliding mode controller to a nonlinear system consisting of a hydraulic turbine and a synchronous generator connected to an infinite bus.The main goals of the controller are to control the rotor angle as well as the terminal voltage, to improve the stability properties, and to obtain good dynamic response.
