A novel flame retardant poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/hydroxy apatite–graphene oxide (Hap-GO) nanocomposite has been prepared by solvent blending. In the present work, graphene oxide were introduced as templates to fabricate hydroxyapatite (HA) using a facile solution-based in situ synthesis method, and GO–HA were successfully prepared. Results from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and The Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) indicate that HA is synthesized on graphene oxide. The thermal and flammability properties of the nanocomposite were investigated using thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). The presence of both Hap and graphene in the polymer matrix especially with 5 wt% (Hap-GO) leads to an increase in the amount of char in 700 C from 0.5% to 11.9%. HaP-GO nanocomposites with phosphorus and graphene layer structures were found to Contribute to excellent flame retardancy compared to that of neat poly(vinyl alcohol). Therefore, the synergistic effect of HaP-GO is quite useful, and this material can be utilized as a potential flame retardant.
